Shourya Saini sets world record to win gold at World Deaf C'ships

Shourya Saini clinched the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions gold medal at the World Deaf Shooting Championships in Hanover, Germany, on Thursday.

Saini, who earlier won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle final, claimed the gold medal with a world record mark of 452.4.

Ukraine’s Oleksandr Kostyk (442.6) and Dmytro Staroselets (432) won the silver and bronze medals.

Saini was the most dominant shooter in the final since he collected 153.3 in the first series and stayed ahead of the rest of the field.

India’s Kushagra Rajawat Singh finished fourth and missed out on a podium finish as he could accumulate 416.5 points.

In the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol final, Chetan Hanmant settled for the bronze medal behind Ukraine Serhii Ohorodnyk and Oleksandr Kolodii.

So far, India won 17 medals at the Championships, including five gold, seven silver and five bronze.

On Wednesday, Mahit Sandhu won a gold medal in the 50m rifle-prone women’s final, while Abhinav Deshwal won a silver medal in the 25m pistol men’s final.

The World Deaf Championships, which started on August 29, will end on September 7.
