Narayana Ajith breaks two national records at the National Weightlifting Cships

Narayana Ajith broke two national records at the ongoing 2024 National Weightlifting Championship, in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday.

Competing in the men’s 73kg category, Ajith lifted 140kg in the snatch, and his first of two national records came when he successfully lifted 178kg in the clean and jerk category.

With a total of 318kg, Ajith also broke the overall total national record in this weight class. He won gold in the men’s 73kg category, retaining his title from last year.

Ajith had previously lifted 312kg at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships and finished in the 16th position at the event.

On Sunday, fellow weightlifter Muthupandi Raja won gold in the men’s 61kg category, with a record-breaking 289kg total, a national record in that category.

He also set the record for the clean and jerk, lifting 165kg.

Earlier, 21-year-old Sufna Jasmin lifted a total of 169kg (76kg snatch, and 93kg clean and jerk) to win the gold in the women’s 45kg category.

in doing so, she too broke two national records, one in the snatch and the other for the total weight lifted in the event. She bettered the previous snatch record of 74kg.
