Judo's surprise medal and other highlights from Day 8

After three consecutive days of medals, India had a slow day at the 2024 Paris Paralympics with just one medal coming on the eighth day.

Kapil Parmar surprised everyone when he defeated Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira 10-0 with an impressive Ippon in just 33 seconds of the men’s 60kg category bronze medal match.

Here is how the eighth day unfolded for the Indian contingent at the Paris Paralympics 2024:

Para-Shooting

Mona Agarwal and Sidhartha Babu couldn’t get past the Mixed 50m Rifle Prone Qualifications and ended with 30th and 22nd position respectively with 610.5 and 615.8 points. With this result, India’s shooting campaign at the Paralympics comes to an end.

Para judo

World No. 1, Kapil Parmar created history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in para-judo at the Paralympic Games

Competing in the J1 class of men’s 60kg category, a category for athletes with no to very low visual acuity, he defeated Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira 10-0 with an impressive Ippon in just 33 seconds in the bronze medal match.

In the women’s 48kg J2 category of blind judo, Kokila Kaushiklate succumbed 0-10 to Kazakhstan’s Akmaral Nauatbek in the quarterfinals. She did have another shot at a podium finish but another 0-10 loss to Yuliia Ivanytska meant that exited the competition.

Para Archery

The Indian contingent’s archery campaign ended with heartbreak.

The mixed recurve team of Harvinder Singh and Pooja Jatyan lost the bronze medal match in the shoot-off.

The Indian duo, who had previously triumphed over Australia in the Round of 16 via a shoot-off, struggled to replicate that success in their bronze medal match.

Para-athletics

In the women’s 100m T12 semi-finals, Simran ran a confident race and finished 2nd with a timing of 12.33s. But this was good enough for her to qualify for the finals.

However, she failed to win a medal after finishing fourth in the final.
