ICC launches social media moderation program

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a social media moderation initiative aimed at fostering a positive and inclusive online environment for teams and players in anticipation of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Over 60 players have already signed up as the onboarding process continues.

This new program is part of the ICC’s broader digital strategy for the tournament, featuring advanced software designed to protect the cricket community from toxic online content.

The initiative seeks to safeguard the mental well-being of individuals, promoting a healthier, more supportive online atmosphere for fans and participants alike.

To implement the social media moderation, the ICC has partnered with GoBubble, leveraging a blend of AI technology and human oversight to monitor comments on the ICC’s official Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube accounts, as well as those of participating players who choose to opt in.

This innovative system is designed to detect and hide toxic content, such as hate speech and harassment, creating a safer space for fan interaction during the World Cup.

Players can benefit from this service by having harmful comments filtered out, enabling them to promote themselves and the sport in a more secure environment.

Speaking on the topic, ICC Head of Digital, Finn Bradshaw said, “We are dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all participants and fans of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, it’s been great to see so many of the players and teams embrace our new initiative.”

The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup is set to begin Thursday, with Bangladesh taking on Scotland in the tournament opener in Sharjah at 3:30 PM, IST.
