Forest dept ratchets up efforts to capture eluding leopard at RGIA

Hyderabad: The Telangana Forest Department has heightened its endeavours to capture the leopard that entered Rajiv Gandhi Intercontinental Airport (RGIA) and has been evading seize for the past two times.

The leopard entered the airport premises on Sunday, and its actions have been captured by surveillance cameras. RGIA officers instantly notified the forest section, which subsequently set up traps to capture the leopard. Even with attempts spanning two days, the officers have nevertheless to efficiently trap the elusive animal.

“Keeping the urgency and sensitivity of the matter it was decided to enhance the variety of cages from the existing three to five. Further, 15 additional entice cameras will be put in at strategic locations in addition to the current 5 put in at diverse areas,” chief wildlife warden MC Pargaien explained.

This final decision was taken by the section soon after reviewing the position of the strayed leopard’s movement with RGIA officials, like Sudeep Lakhtakia, govt director of GMR airports, on Tuesday morning.

The forest officials reported no visuals of the leopard were being captured on the mounted lure cameras on Monday night. Forest officers have been intently monitoring the scenario, ensuring that all preparations to seize the leopard are in location. Residents and persons in close by places have been recommended to exercise caution and continue being vigilant. The chief wildlife warden has urged locals to immediately tell officers if they observe any motion of the leopard.
