A Big Club, A Big Challenge

After years of being a key figure at FC Goa and a vital part of the Indian national team, Brandon Fernandes has made a pivotal move back to Mumbai City FC.

Known for his technical brilliance and playmaking ability, Brandon’s return to one of the biggest clubs in the Indian Super League (ISL) has fans buzzing.

In an exclusive conversation with The Bridge, Brandon opens up about his decision to leave Goa, his emotional return as a rival, and how he balances the pressures of both club and country.

Return to Mumbai City FC

Brandon Fernandes’ return to Mumbai City FC was a major talking point, given his earlier years with the club and his time with rivals FC Goa.

Brandon reflected on his decision to return, saying, “Mumbai City is a big club, and getting an opportunity to play for them is a big thing. When the offer came, I said, why not just give it a try? And yes, I’m back here with Mumbai City FC, it’s a big challenge for me, and I’m ready to take it on.”

The allure of Mumbai City FC is undeniable, as the club’s stature has only grown over the years.

Their association with City Football Group and the progressive footballing philosophy has made them one of the most exciting teams in Indian football.

For a player of Brandon’s caliber, this return represents both familiarity and fresh challenges.

Transitioning from one club to another isn’t just about switching jerseys; it involves adapting to a new culture, a different playing style, and sometimes even different philosophies.

When asked about his transition back to Mumbai City FC, Brandon shared, “I knew Mumbai City FC and how they function because I was here before. The philosophy and everything around the club are very exciting. It didn’t take much time for me to adapt.”

He credited his smooth transition to the supportive environment at the club, noting that the players and staff made him feel at home from the very beginning.

“Now I feel like I’m at home,” he said, underscoring his comfort level with the team and the club’s systems.

Facing FC Goa as a Rival

In his recent match against FC Goa, Brandon experienced the emotional turmoil of returning to face his former club.

Having spent a significant portion of his career with the Goan side, the feelings were mixed.

“To be honest, it was a little weird for me. But you know, we’re all professionals. Once you step on the pitch, it’s a different scenario. You play for your club, no matter who the opponent is,” he remarked.

Brandon’s approach was purely professional, and his goal was clear—to get the victory for Mumbai City FC.

Evolution of Indian Football

As one of the most experienced Indian players in the Indian Super League (ISL), Brandon has witnessed the rapid evolution of Indian football firsthand.

“If you see five, six years back, it was different. The competition is more competitive now. Players are improving, many good foreigners are coming in, and it’s a process. Everything has improved gradually, and I’m sure going forward it will get even better,” Brandon said.

Known for his technical ability, Brandon has often been regarded as one of the most skilled Indian players, sometimes even referred to as “an extra foreigner” on the pitch.

When asked about dealing with such high expectations, he shrugged off the notion of pressure.

“To be honest, I don’t feel any pressure because playing football is my passion. I’m happy when I have the ball at my feet. I just want to express myself and do what I can do best.”

His approach is simple: hard work and enjoyment.

Brandon’s love for the game shines through in every word, and it’s clear that his focus remains on playing to the best of his ability, regardless of the expectations around him.

European Opportunity

In 2012, Brandon had an opportunity to join Reading FC in the Premier League—a moment that could have changed the course of his career.

However, circumstances, including the complexities of an Indian passport, meant the move didn’t materialize.

“It couldn’t go through for many reasons, but the Indian passport was a big reason,” he explained.

He left the door open when asked if he still harbors ambitions of playing abroad. “Everything is open. If I get an opportunity, why not? But now, my focus is on Mumbai City FC and having a good ISL season.”

Despite injuries and the strain of switching systems between club and country, Brandon continues to perform at a high level, embodying the resilience and professionalism that define modern footballers.

With Mumbai City FC, Brandon Fernandes has a big season ahead of him.

As Mumbai City continues to push for more success in the ISL, Brandon remains a vital cog in their machine, ready to take on any challenge that comes his way.
