'SLK will become a major force in Indian football,' Wilbur Lasrado of Malappuram FC

With the inaugural edition of the Super League Kerala approaching, Malappuram FC is eagerly preparing for its maiden match against Forca Kochi on September 7th in Kochi.

Under the leadership of Head of Football Operations Wilbur Lasrado, the new football franchise is poised to make a significant impact in a league designed to elevate football standards in Kerala.

In an exclusive interview with The Bridge, Lasrado shares insights into the team’s vision, strategies, and what fans can expect.

A new era for Kerala football

Wilbur Lasrado is optimistic about the potential of the Super League Kerala, describing it as a “highly competitive and well-organised” platform for both local and national talent.

“The structure of the league fosters local talent while giving players a chance to showcase their skills on a bigger stage.”

The competition level, he notes, is intense, with every team bringing a unique style of play that reflects Kerala’s rich football culture.

“It’s a blend of seasoned professionals and young talents, making it an exciting and challenging environment for any new team,” he adds.

Looking ahead, Lasrado is optimistic about the league’s growth.

“I envision the Super League Kerala becoming a major force in Indian football, not only for talent development but also as a commercially viable entity,” he explains.

He believes the league could even serve as a feeder system for national competitions.

“Malappuram FC aims to be at the forefront of this evolution, setting standards both on the pitch and in the way we engage with our community.”

The structure and vision of the Super League Kerala

According to Lasrado, the league operates outside the traditional Indian football pyramid, creating an independent platform specifically designed for Kerala’s footballing talent.

“The league is designed to provide a professional platform for football in Kerala, independent of the traditional Indian football pyramid.”

With the primary goal being the enhancement of football standards in the state, the league features six teams competing in a league format, with the top four advancing to the semifinals and the final determining the champion.

“It offers local players a chance to demonstrate their abilities and potentially advance to higher levels of the sport,” says Lasrado.

The league also focuses on fostering a sustainable football culture in the state, encouraging youth participation and fan engagement.

“It’s a well-organized, competitive league aimed at generating lasting interest in the sport,” he adds.

Building a brand and fan base

Lasrado emphasises that Malappuram FC’s brand is deeply rooted in the local culture of Malappuram, a region renowned for its passion for football.

“Our brand identity reflects the passion, resilience, and community spirit inherent in Malappuram’s football heritage,” he explains.

The club will focus on grassroots programs, engaging fans through social media, and forming partnerships with local businesses to build a strong, recognisable identity.

“It’s about representing Malappuram’s pride,” he adds.

Building a loyal fan base is a significant challenge for any new team, but he believes Malappuram FC is well-positioned for success.

“Malappuram is often referred to as the ‘Mecca of Indian Football,’ with a substantial portion of Blasters fans originating from this region. The love for the sport here runs deep,” he says.

“We will want to give every fan who wakes up on the morning of a match day an opportunity to think, maybe I can have an experience today by watching my football team play as we aim to turn our on-pitch performances into something akin to art.” he explains.

To attract and retain fans, the club aims to create a unique matchday experience with affordable tickets, a family-friendly atmosphere, and engaging entertainment.

“Our goal is to make every supporter feel like they’ve been part of the team’s journey from the beginning,” Lasrado emphasises.

Vision for Malappuram FC and the league

Lasrado’s long-term vision for Malappuram FC is to become a symbol of football excellence.

“Our immediate goal is to win the championship, but our long-term focus is on building a strong, enduring brand,” he says.

The club is committed to playing thrilling, attractive and ultimately victorious football whilst developing young players who can contribute to both the club and the broader football ecosystem in Kerala and India.

“Beyond winning trophies, we want to create a club that the people of Malappuram can be proud of, reflecting their passion, culture, and dreams on a national stage,” Lasrado adds.

In terms of community engagement, the club’s efforts extend beyond football.

“We view football as a means to unite, inspire, and empower the community,” says Lasrado.

The club plans to involve all age groups through youth academies, senior leagues, and educational initiatives that use football to teach life skills and promote healthy lifestyles.

“We aim to strengthen community bonds and contribute to Malappuram’s social and economic development through football,” he explains.

A new path for Kerala football

Lasrado also highlights the unique structure of the Super League Kerala, which operates independently of the traditional Indian football pyramid.

“Currently, it’s a league of six teams, with the top four advancing to the semifinals and eventually a final to determine the champion,” he says.

The league’s objective is to elevate the standard of football in Kerala by offering local players a platform to showcase their talents.

“We aim to build a sustainable football culture in the state, encouraging youth participation and fan engagement,” Lasrado explains.

As Malappuram FC prepares to face Forca Kochi in their first match, excitement is building. With experienced coach John Gregory, who has a background in the Indian Super League, at the helm, and a clear vision for the future, the team is ready to embrace the challenges ahead.

“We’re eager to compete and, more importantly, to represent Malappuram and its footballing heritage,” concludes Lasrado.
