Mahit Sandhu breaks world record, clinches gold at World Deaf C'ships

India’s Mahit Sandhu continued to shine at the World Deaf Shooting Championships in Hanover, Germany, as she won the gold medal in the 50m rifle-prone women’s final on Wednesday.

Mahit won the gold medal with a world record score of 247.4. Hungary’s Mira Zsuzsanna (245.2) and Yulia Yevtushenko (224.5) of Ukraine won the silver and bronze medals.

From the word go, Mahit stayed ahead as she scored 51.1 after the first series with four 10-plus scores and a 9.8, with Mira scoring 50.6.

In the second series, Mahit took her tally to 102.5, shooting four 10-plus scores. In the remaining 14 shots, she did not lose her focus as she hit 13 ten-plus scores.

This was Mahit’s third medal and second gold at the Championships. Earlier, she won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle women’s final before pairing up with Dhanush Srikanth to win the mixed air rifle gold medal.

Natasha Uday, however, failed to shine as she finished seventh in the eight-contestant final with a score of 139.3.

Meanwhile, Abhinav Deshwal won a silver medal in the 25m pistol men’s final. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Kolodii won the gold medal, while Ming-Jui Hsu of Chinese Taipei won the bronze medal.

With this, India’s medal tally went up to 15, including four gold, seven silver and four bronze.

The World Deaf Championships, which started on August 29, will end on September 7.
