Advance to Group Stage in inaugural AFC Women's Champions League

Odisha FC has etched its name in history by becoming the first Indian club to qualify for the group stage of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League 2024/25.

The team secured this monumental achievement with a gritty 2-1 victory over Etihad Club of Jordan in their final Group B match, showcasing resilience and determination on the international stage.

The match unfolded as a high-stakes encounter, with both teams aware of what was at stake.

Odisha FC seized the initiative in the 27th minute when Jennifer Kankam Yeboah capitalized on a defensive miscue by Etihad Club, slotting the ball home to give her side a crucial early lead.

The goal not only set the tone for the match but also highlighted Odisha’s intent to dominate.

As the first half drew to a close, tensions flared, resulting in a dramatic moment that saw both teams reduced to 10 players.

An altercation between Etihad’s Albtoush and Odisha’s Grace led to both players receiving red cards, adding an extra layer of complexity to the match.

Despite this setback, Odisha FC managed to preserve their lead heading into the break.

The second half saw Etihad Club fighting back with renewed vigor, determined to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Their efforts bore fruit in the 57th minute when Maysa Jbarah found the back of the net, leveling the score and setting up a tense finish.

However, Odisha FC refused to back down. Just 14 minutes later, Yeboah struck again, scoring her second goal of the match in the 71st minute, a goal that would prove decisive.

With this historic win, Odisha FC finishes at the top of Group B, securing a perfect six points from two matches.

Their achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian football, as they advance to the group stage of the AFC Women’s Champions League.

They are the only club from SAFF region, who has managed to qualify for the group stages.

Odisha FC will now prepare to face Urawa Red Diamond Ladies from Japan, Ho Chi Minh City FC from Vietnam, and Taichung Blue Whale Women’s Football from Taiwan in Group C, where they will continue their journey on Asia’s grandest stage.
